How does a solid perfume brand leverage custom tin packaging to enhance fragrance retention

How does a solid perfume brand leverage custom tin packaging to enhance fragrance retention?

This is a case study.
We collaborate with numerous beauty and personal care companies to design and manufacture custom tin packaging that extends product freshness while enhancing the brand’s premium image. For many products, packaging optimization is just as important as the fragrance formulation itself. By combining precision-engineered tin structures, enhanced sealing systems, food-grade interior coatings, and custom decorations, we help brands significantly reduce fragrance loss during shipping, retail display, and daily use.

Through a case study titled “How a Solid Perfume Brand Used Custom Tin Packaging to Enhance Fragrance Longevity,” we’ll share how we transformed packaging from a mere decorative container into an effective solution for preserving product freshness—covering everything from packaging design and material selection to sealing technology and production quality control.

Custom Tin Packaging Case Study: Designing Packaging Around Fragrance Preservation

Unlike liquid perfumes stored in sealed glass bottles with spray dispensers, solid perfumes are exposed to the surrounding environment whenever the container is opened. Even high-quality wax-based formulations gradually lose their volatile aromatic compounds due to oxidation and evaporation. Therefore, the packaging itself becomes one of the most critical factors influencing the product throughout its entire lifecycle.

One of our European perfume clients experienced this issue firsthand. Although feedback on the perfume’s quality was excellent immediately after production, many users reported that the scent noticeably faded after three to four months of continuous use. Laboratory tests confirmed that the perfume formulation itself had not deteriorated. The primary cause was excessive air exposure due to an inadequate seal in the packaging.

Rather than reformulating the fragrance, they redesigned their custom tin packaging. This decision significantly reduced R&D costs while allowing the company to maintain its signature fragrance style.

Custom Tin Packaging Is Tailored to Consumers’ Actual Usage Habits

Before redesigning the packaging, our team analyzed how customers actually interacted with the product.

Several key findings emerged:

Most consumers open the tin two to five times a day.
Many users carry the perfume in their handbags or pockets.
The product is frequently exposed to temperature fluctuations between indoor and outdoor environments.
Consumers prefer packaging that is compact, lightweight, and easy to open, while still maintaining a premium appearance.

These findings formed the basis of our design strategy for the custom tin packaging. Rather than focusing solely on aesthetics, we optimized the packaging based on actual usage patterns.

The final design features a compact round tin, approximately 60 mm in diameter by 18 mm in height, capable of holding 20–25 grams of solid perfume while minimizing unnecessary internal air space. Reducing headspace lowers the oxygen content inside the container, helping to slow the oxidation of the perfume over time.

A tapered body structure was also adopted, allowing the cap to sit flush with the container wall. This not only improves the cap’s alignment but also enhances the sealing pressure around the packaging’s entire circumference.

Using Multiple Sealing Technologies to Protect Highly Volatile Fragrance Oils

The most significant improvement is the upgraded sealing design of the tin-can packaging.

Many standard cosmetic tins rely solely on friction between the cap and the can body to create a seal. While this may be sufficient for dry products, it does not provide adequate protection for highly volatile fragrance compounds.

In this project, we incorporated multiple sealing technologies into our custom tins packaging.

1. Food-grade PVC gasket
A precision injection-molded PVC sealing ring is integrated into the inner side of the lid. When the lid is closed, the sealing ring presses evenly against the rim of the container, significantly reducing air exchange.

2. Precision crimping tolerances
Production tolerances are maintained within ±0.05 millimeters, ensuring consistent compression for every lid during mass production.

3. Optimized lid interference fit
Rather than using an overly tight closure that frustrates consumers, we designed a balanced interference fit that provides an excellent seal while maintaining ease of repeated opening.

4. Reduced Internal Air Volume
The internal dimensions have been specifically optimized to fit perfume refills, minimizing air space inside the container and slowing oxidation.

Together, these design elements significantly improve fragrance longevity without altering the perfume formula itself.

Custom tin packaging materials protect both the product and the container

Selecting the appropriate tinplate material is also critical to this project.

This project uses high-quality electrolytically tin-plated steel sheet with a thickness of 0.23-0.25 millimeters. This thickness range achieves an excellent balance between rigidity, weight, manufacturing precision, and production efficiency.

The interior is coated with a food-grade epoxy protective layer, specifically selected for its perfect compatibility with cosmetics. This coating prevents essential oils from coming into direct contact with the metal surface while maintaining long-term chemical stability.

The exterior features a soft-touch matte finish, offering consumers numerous benefits:

Enhanced grip during use
Reduced visibility of fingerprints
Improved scratch resistance
An exceptional tactile experience

Since solid perfumes are frequently handled throughout the day, the quality of the tactile experience reinforces the brand’s premium positioning.

Custom Tin Packaging Combines Structural Design with Brand Identity

Consumers rarely separate packaging quality from product quality. Exquisite packaging design conveys a sense of reliability even before the perfume is experienced.

To reinforce its premium positioning, the brand has incorporated various decorative manufacturing techniques into its custom tin packaging:

Packaging Feature Consumer Benefit Brand Value
Matte varnish Soft premium feel Luxury positioning
Micro embossing Rich tactile texture Stronger brand recognition
Spot UV logo Visual contrast Premium shelf impact
Pantone color matching Consistent brand colors Global brand consistency
Debossed logo Elegant appearance Long-lasting branding

These decorative elements were carefully selected by the client because they enhance the product’s perceived quality without compromising seal integrity.

Production Quality Determines Fragrance Consistency

Even the finest packaging design cannot guarantee consistent results without strict production processes. As a professional custom tin can manufacturer, TSING incorporates multiple quality control stages throughout the production process.

Incoming tin-plated steel sheets are inspected for thickness consistency, coating quality, and surface flatness. During the stamping process, our digital measurement systems continuously verify dimensional accuracy. The flanging process is frequently monitored to ensure consistent lid compression across production batches. Each production batch undergoes random seal verification in accordance with standardized internal quality procedures.

Finished products also undergo visual inspections, which include:

Coating adhesion
Surface smoothness
Scratch resistance
Print accuracy
Flange alignment
Consistency of opening

Only after passing all inspection stages are the manufactured custom tins packaged and shipped. These manufacturing standards ensure that the performance of every container remains consistent—not just the first prototype approved by the customer.

Custom Tin Packaging Delivers Measurable Results for Solid Perfume Brands

Following its launch, the redesigned packaging brought about significant improvements. Compared to the previous packaging design, the brand observed:

Improved fragrance stability during long-term storage
Increased customer satisfaction with fragrance longevity
Fewer complaints related to fragrance fading
Enhanced perception of product quality
Higher repeat purchase rates

Most importantly, the company achieved these improvements without altering the perfume formula itself. The optimized custom tin packaging became a key factor in enhancing product performance.

For high-end cosmetics brands, packaging should not be viewed merely as an external container. Well-designed packaging is itself part of the product preservation system, safeguarding product integrity and brand reputation throughout the product’s lifecycle.
